Take a few extra days to experience the wonderful city of Stockholm. Stockholm is a popular tourist destination for a reason: full of islands, it grew up where Lake Mälar meets the sea. There are many museums, and lots of other more seasonal things to do, especially in the middle of winter.
You can visit the Vasa Museum, Skansen (a popular museum of museums, focused on living history and preserved old buildings), stroll in the old town (Gamla Stan), enjoy the Nobel Week lights, or visit a Christmas Market. See Visit Stockholm for the city's up-to-date guide to Stockholm.
Light in December
December is the darkest time of the year in Stockholm, which means it's also when light is most celebrated. There are around six hours of daylight per day in December. Once the sun sets, everyone shares their light: lamps shine from the windows of apartments and houses, lines of candles welcome you in to shops and parties.
In the bakeries, saffron-flavoured and saffron-coloured goods are in season, a cheerful yellow in the dark. The classic amongst these are Lussekatter, a double-spiral of saffron-flavoured bun, dotted with two raisins.
